De Uitkijk, Amsterdam

In this poignant drama by Andrey Zvyagintsev, Gleb, a successful Russian entrepreneur, appears to have it all. He lives with his wife Galina and his teenage son Seryozha in a large, glass-fronted villa on the outskirts of a provincial town. When Russia invades Ukraine in 2022, reality increasingly intrudes on his daily life: employees are fleeing abroad and Gleb’s company is forced to cooperate with the mobilisation effort. His business is under pressure and social unrest is mounting. When he discovers that his wife is cheating on him, he slowly loses his grip on reality. Caught between political pressure, business interests and personal humiliation, Gleb tries to maintain control over his life. This culminates in an ever-escalating confrontation with himself and those around him, in which the line between political reality and his private life becomes increasingly blurred. With Minotaur, the Russian master filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev returned to the Cannes main competition after almost ten years, where the film won the Grand Prix. The film was received with great enthusiasm by the international film press, and the work of regular cinematographer Mikhail Krichman and the powerful performances of lead actors Dmitriy Mazurov and Iris Lebedeva have also been widely praised. The screenplay is based on Claude Chabrol’s La Femme Infidèle (1969), and the haunting score is by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine. With its mythical references to the Minotaur, Zvyagintsev delivers a gripping thriller about guilt, choices and human vulnerability. (2026 · Andrey Zvyagintsev · 142 min) Screening at De Uitkijk.
