The year is 1936 when the British Empire is tightening its grip on Palestine. Yusuf is caught between his village and his job in Jerusalem, where Palestinian journalists are trying to document the truth amid increasing censorship and repression. His friend Khalid becomes radicalized and joins the growing resistance, while others try to survive amid fear and hope. Conflicting ideals continue to escalate until a brutal armed conflict erupts between Palestinian freedom fighters and ruthless British officers. Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36 is a spectacular, deeply human film about the first steps of the Palestinian emancipation, an underrepresented but crucial chapter in world history. With this film, Jacir has created the most ambitious Palestinian production ever: a cinematic achievement brought to life under extreme circumstances, in the midst of an ongoing war. It is therefore no surprise that it was selected as the Palestinian entry for the Oscars.
