Film
La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928)
Sunday 15 November, 21:00
De Uitkijk, Amsterdam
It was a dreary October evening in 1929 when the ‘De Uitkijk’ Film League opened, the first avant-garde cinema in the Netherlands. During the festive opening, alongside a few short films, one feature film was screened: LA PASSION DE JEANNE D’ARC (1928). Dressed as a boy, Joan of Arc fights against English rule in 15th-century France. The war is won, but Joan of Arc ends up at the stake. LA PASSION DE JEANNE D’ARC is based on the accounts of her conviction for heresy and follows Joan of Arc in the final hours before her execution. Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer draws the viewer into her subjective experience of the trial through painfully intimate close-ups and atmospheric sets. For November’s Sunday Classic, we are screening this ultimate Uitkijk classic! On Sunday evening, 8 November, lecturer Lotte Manders (MA Film Studies, UvA) will provide a brief introduction to LA PASSION DE JEANNE D’ARC. (1928 · Carl Theodor Dreyer · 82 min) Screening at De Uitkijk.
