Reporters (1981) | Tapis Rouge Classiques x De Uitkijk
Sunday 15 November, 18:50
De Uitkijk, Amsterdam
In Reporters , filmmaker and photographer Raymond Depardon follows two press photographers from his own agency, Gamma, in Paris for a month. The photographers train their lenses on campaigning politicians and showbiz stars. The result is a fascinating portrait of a paradoxical relationship: the celebrities desperately need the photographers for their image, but hate being captured in unguarded moments. By making the photographers the centerpiece of the film, Depardon simultaneously paints a sharp portrait of social life in Paris around 1980. In terms of form, the documentary aligns with the tradition of direct cinema, although Depardon deliberately chooses to be palpably present as a cameraman and sound engineer, intervening when necessary. The film features numerous familiar faces 'caught' by the reporters, including Jacques Chirac, Jean-Luc Godard, Mireille Mathieu, and Richard Gere. (1981 · Raymond Depardon · 90 min) Screening at De Uitkijk.
