Daisies (1966)

Monday 14 September, 16:55

De Uitkijk, Amsterdam

Two young women, Marie I and Marie II, decide that if the world is corrupt anyway, they might as well join in. What follows is a frenzied series of feasts, seductions, acts of vandalism and absurd pranks, in which nothing and no one is safe. With *DAISIES* (1966), Věra Chytilová made one of the most anarchic and idiosyncratic films of the Czechoslovak New Wave. Flashy editing, varying film stocks, surrealist sets and playful stop-motion make the film a visual feast, whilst the two Maries undermine the conventions of femininity, consumerism and obedience. Their fun is a form of protest: against a world which, in their view, is already broken. (1966 · Věra Chytilová · 75 min) Screening at De Uitkijk.
